Believe it or not, a legal assistant or paralegal is not a licensed profession in the United States. Although some paralegals initially got on the job education when the profession came into existence in the 1960s and 1970s, much more people entering the industry these days do so with certification. Certification is voluntary, not a requirement to be a paralegal. Nonetheless, a paralegal with qualifications and special education is normally better equipped for promotion and will certainly stand out in a field of individuals who could likely satisfy the vast majority of qualifications but who aren’t licensed.
